The
Necrophone Traces:
Archive,
Manuscripts, Documentation of Homicide
These days, a
musician’s or a group’s commitment to drive changes in the society is quite
rare. One of the committed groups is Homicide. In the local music scene, Homicide has enriched Indonesian “alternative music” especially to those who
deviate from the mainstream music. This Hip Hop group split up a long time ago but it still
keeps the spirit of change that has settled in their fans’ subconscious minds. s.14 Art Space and Library considers Homicide’s history and reputation
deserve to be reviewed as a main source of research of our culture.
In this exhibition, s.14 with Aminudin TH Siregar as the
curator, presents the chronicles of Homicide’s journey as a Hip Hop group from
Bandung that is known for their critical lyrics about social changes, crimes,
repression of humanity, anti-capitalism, and sharp views on the threat of
neoliberalism in today’s global economy. Compared to the more acceptable
quality of musicality, Homicide’s
lyrics are not only agitative but also known to have discursive strengths that
require great precision for their fans to react or to merely understand. In terms
of the achievements of their lyrics, Homicide sits in a special position. By
them, lyrics are consciously pushed to achieve the awareness effect in the
process of social changes.
There are many intellectuals who
realise that art has to bring back its main function from being tools of
ideology to being critical tools to free humans, refunction. Post-auratic art (art that has lost its aura) has been
manipulated for economic and commercial purposes, or for propaganda of ideology
whilst establishing repression. These days,
post-auratic art, including music, has become a commodity of mass culture. Art
(music) is no longer created as a result from aesthetic experiences but becomes
the object of manipulation of market mechanism. Now, in the reality of
Indonesian chaotic music, “useful value” of music is released and is replaced
with “exchange value”. As a result, “serious music” and “light music” become
exchangeable products eroding borders of hierarchy. Throughout their career, Homicide realised the risks and paradox
they were facing. Homicide rejects
the view that “music as music” and “art as art” that only shows the
over-idolisation of art/music, possibly misleading and covering up the
truth.
Initially called Verbal Homicide, this group consisted of Morgue
Vanguard (MC, Producer), Sarkasz (MC), DJ E (Turntables), and Andre (Guitars), formed in Bandung in
1994 and
split up in 2007. By showing their collection of posters, photos, music videos,
manuscripts of lyrics, CDs, T-shirts, vinyl, and merchandise, this exhibition
invites us to see snippets of this group’s history of continuity and discontinuity
in the music development in Bandung.
To accompany and
complete our experience in understanding this exhibition, s.14 hosts a discussion with the theme of Music and Social Change with Homicide
(Ucok, Aszi, Iwan), Taufiqrahman, Lingga Agung and Indra Hikmawan a.k.a Papap. There
is also a workshop for students with Ucok Homicide and Jay – a beatmaker from Eyefeelsix
– to give an introduction of the basics of constructing Hip Hop music using
sampling methods. As part of this event, s.14 team will give an introduction to
the basics of Hip Hop music through movements, creation and at last, there is a
film screening on Hip Hop music history selected by Ucok Homicide.
